e-Tax (My Number Card Method)

Refund: Fastest (~2-3 weeks)[2][19]

File electronically using your My Number Card. Submit 24/7 from your smartphone or PC with the fastest refund processing.

e-Tax (ID/Password Method)

Refund: Fastest (~2-3 weeks)New registration stopped[3][4]

File electronically using an ID/password issued by the tax office. No My Number Card needed, but new registrations stopped since October 2025.

  • +No IC card reader or NFC smartphone needed
  • +Same refund speed as My Number Card e-Tax

  • -New registrations discontinued since October 1, 2025
  • -Need to watch for existing ID expiration

NTA Online Tool (Print & Submit)

Refund: Slower (~1-2 months)[5]

Create your return using the NTA's web tool, then print and submit by mail or in person. Works without e-Tax setup.

Submit by Mail

Refund: Slower (~1-2 months)[6][7]

Mail your completed return to your jurisdictional tax office. The postmark date counts as the filing date.

  • +No need to visit the tax office
  • +Postmark date counts as filing date (postmarked by deadline is OK)
  • +Prepare and post at any time convenient for you

Cons

  • -Slower refund (1-2 months)
  • -Must be sent as first-class mail (δΏ‘ζ›Έ); parcels/courier NOT accepted
  • -Since January 2025, NTA no longer stamps receipt date on copies

In-Person at Tax Office / Filing Venue

Refund: Slower (~1-2 months)[15][22]

Submit directly at the tax office counter or a special filing venue. During the filing period, staff can help you file via smartphone.

Refund: Standard (Depends on filing method used)[34]

Hire a licensed tax accountant (η¨Žη†ε£«, zeirishi) to prepare and file your return. Best for complex tax situations or when you don't have time to file yourself.

When mailing your return, tax documents are classified as "correspondence" (δΏ‘ζ›Έ) and MUST be sent as first-class mail. Parcel services (courier, Yu-Pack, Yu-Mail) are NOT accepted.[6]
The e-Tax ID/Password method has stopped issuing new credentials since October 1, 2025. Existing credentials remain valid for now, but transitioning to the My Number Card method is recommended.[4]
