My Number (Individual Number)
Definition
A unique 12-digit identification number assigned to every resident of Japan (both Japanese and foreign nationals). Used for tax filing, social insurance, and disaster response procedures. Employers must collect employees' My Numbers for tax withholding and social insurance purposes. My Number Cards (マイナンバーカード) serve as photo ID and enable online government services.
