Tax Office (In-Person)

税務署(窓口持参)

Overview

Tax offices (税務署) are local branches of the National Tax Agency (国税庁), with approximately 524 locations across Japan. They handle acceptance, examination, and collection of national taxes including corporate tax, income tax, consumption tax, withholding tax, inheritance tax, and gift tax. Your jurisdictional tax office is determined by your company's registered head office address (本店所在地) for corporations, or your residence address (住所地/納税地) for individual business owners. You can search for your tax office by address on the NTA website. During the tax return filing period (February 16 – March 15), some tax offices set up temporary filing venues. Venue locations and schedules are posted on the NTA website.

How to use

• Search for your jurisdictional tax office by address or postal code on the NTA website under 'Tax Office Locations' (税務署の所在地) • Complete the return/notification with all required attachments and bring them to the counter • Office hours are generally weekdays 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM • During the tax return filing period, some venues may be open on weekends • Bring a copy of the return if you want it stamped as received (受付印) • Bring identity verification documents (My Number Card, etc.) • When the office is closed, you can drop filings into the after-hours collection box (時間外収受箱) at the front entrance
